Distributed Sound Systems

Venues where crowds or spectators are spread out over a large area such as state fairs, amusement parks, shopping malls or airports require a design approach where many loudspeakers sometimes thousands, are distributed to provide consistent audible public address. These type of distributed sound systems normally require a design that allows compensation for signal loss due to long cable runs, and can be easily modified for adding or eliminating sections of loudspeakers. Distributed sound systems may be designed to include logical or physical sections, sometimes called areas or zones. Providing areas and zones of coverage for music or public address can accommodate functional needs to address the public with announcements in one location but not another, play music in different areas, or adjust levels based on time or use. There are two categories of distributed loudspeaker system designs. They are: constant voltage and distributed amplifier designs.

Constant Voltage Systems

The most prevalent and cost effective form of distributed loudspeaker design is a constant voltage loudspeakers system. Constant voltage systems rely on a network of audio transformers or autoformers at each loudspeaker and at various stages on the transmission line to manage sound levels and to compensate for varying audio signal voltage across long distances. The audio transmission line is designed around a constant voltage determined by the cable lengths, number of loudspeakers in the sound system, the required sound pressure level of audio program and public address and application and any applicable codes and standards. The constant voltage configuration simplifies the design and management of large distributed loudspeaker systems in that it doesn’t require impedance calculations. Instead the designer will focus on the combined power draw or rating of each loudspeaker transformer assembly, as well as speaker sensitivity and directivity. Transformers designed for use in constant voltage public address systems are usually have multiple taps on the primary side labelled in Watts and secondary side labelled as load. If for instance a 70V. loudspeaker assembly has a transformer with a primary labelled 5W and a secondary labelled 8ohms, the loudspeaker will receive 5W of power when a 70V audio signal is applied to the primary. The sum total of the selected Wattage taps at each speaker assembly should not exceed the capacity of the amplifier. As with all audio systems headroom and capacity to grow should be factored into the design. Constant voltage system designed for public address have the following advantages: They allow systems to overcome loss through long transmission lines easily, they are easily added to and reconfigured.

Distributed PA System Powered Systems

Another form of the distributed loudspeaker design for public address, background and foreground music is the distributed powered loudspeakers system. The audio transmission line usually consists of two unshielded twisted pairs, one for a very low source impedance line level signal and the other pair is a DC voltage for powering a small amplifier mounted on or in the loudspeaker enclosure. Distributed powered systems where popular with phone system service providers installing “plain old telephone service” (pots) because the two pair transmission line is the same cable construction used for the on premises wire (red/green, black/yellow) and the DC voltage for powering the distributed amplifiers could be furnished from spare battery capacity used for the telephone exchanges. The transmission line used by the these systems are specified at (0 dBu, approximately 0.7746 VRMS), the AC voltage required to produce 1 mW of power across a 600 Ω load is a standard in legacy phone systems. Distributed powered systems for public address and background music have many of the same advantages of the traditional constant voltage design and lend themselves well to small office environments. The systems use less central equipment consisting of smaller wall mounted appliances that integrate well to key systems or pbx’s.

IP Paging Systems

An newer alternative to public address is similar to the distributed powered loudspeaker design, but uses IP based media converters and PoE amplifiers at each distributed loudspeaker. An IP speaker system shares the design advantages of the distributed powered system but with a higher level of route-ability because they leverage Ethernet transport infrastructure.
