Torrence Sound: Growing Demand for Campus Emergency Notifications
As reported by Campus Safety Magazine, the demand for emergency notification systems on campuses has reached unprecedented levels. Text messaging alerts and intercom usage have seen significant increases over the past four years. In the 2019 Campus Safety Emergency Notification Survey, 71% of respondents used text message alerts, whereas today, an impressive 87% utilize this technology for disseminating emergency notifications. Intercom usage has also risen, with 63% of all respondents currently employing this system for mass notification, up from 53% in 2019.
While other technologies used for mass notification have remained relatively steady over the years, text messaging (SMS) alerts and emails continue to be the most commonly used methods for emergency communication. In 2019, emails held the top spot at 76%, with SMS at 71%. However, in the latest survey, texting has taken the lead at 87%, and emails closely follow at 86%.
