How Modern AV Solutions Are Enhancing Learning in Schools
As highlighted by EdTech Magazine in their article, “How School Districts Are Using Upgraded Audiovisual Tools to Improve Learning,” the Knoxville City Schools (KCS) district faced significant disparities in classroom audiovisual (AV) access. According to Freddie Cox, the Chief Technology Officer of KCS, the district’s schools had varied levels of AV equipment, with some benefiting from modern technology thanks to PTO fundraising, while others relied on outdated and inconsistent tools. This imbalance led to inconsistent learning experiences across the district.
To address these disparities, KCS utilized ESSER funding to launch a district-wide AV system overhaul. A collaborative effort involving IT staff, educators, principals, and students led to the selection of 75- and 86-inch Promethean ActivPanel Titanium interactive displays. These high-tech tools were installed in classrooms across the district, with over 3,700 new AV units distributed to more than 90 schools by early 2022.
The deployment process was thorough, with technicians first assessing the specific needs of each classroom, followed by the installation carried out by an external contractor. The interactive displays, capable of 4K resolution, were mounted in central locations within classrooms and placed on movable stands in larger spaces like libraries and art rooms.
These upgraded AV tools, especially the interactive whiteboards, have significantly improved the teaching and learning experience at KCS. Joseph South, Chief Learning Officer at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), emphasized that while interactive whiteboards are potent educational tools, their effectiveness is maximized when combined with good pedagogy. He encourages schools to fully utilize the interactive capabilities of these boards, as they can transform how lessons are delivered and engage students more deeply.
By upgrading to modern audiovisual tools, KCS has not only standardized the technology available in its classrooms but also enhanced the overall learning environment, making it more interactive and dynamic.
