How Interoperability and Analytics Redefine Nurse Call Systems

As highlighted by Healthcare IT Today in their article Lighting the Way to Efficient Patient Care – How Interoperability and Analytics Change the Nurse Call Paradigm,” the rise in hospital room technology has brought an influx of monitors and devices designed to improve patient safety. However, this influx has also led to significant alert fatigue and burnout among nurses who must manage an overwhelming number of alerts—many of which are non-essential.

During the HIMSS 2024 conference, thought leaders from Rauland, including Elizabeth Anderson (Director, Clinical Experience & Solutions), Karthik Srivathsa (Vice President of Healthcare Engineering), and Trina Geiss (Senior Product Manager – Interoperability), addressed this challenge in their presentation at the Thought Leadership Theater. Their session titled “Responder Enterprise: Lighting the Way to Efficient Patient Care – How Interoperability and Analytics Change the Nurse Call Paradigm” explored innovative ways to reduce the noise and enhance the nurse-patient experience.

A particularly impactful insight from the session was the concept of “digital dust”—a term some use to describe nurse call data. However, Rauland reframed this perspective, viewing nurse call data as a goldmine of actionable insights for improving workflows and combating nurse burnout. By analyzing patterns in this data, healthcare organizations can better understand patient behaviors, leading to optimized staffing strategies and more efficient operations.

Rauland also stressed the importance of interoperability in connecting various data sources—such as patient beds, real-time location systems (RTLS), and mobile devices—to create a comprehensive view of both patient care and staff workflows. When implemented correctly, this integration enhances clinical decision-making tools and enables a holistic approach to patient care that prioritizes efficiency and quality.
